Review: The Salt Room, Brighton

Brighton is fast becoming a staple on the foodie map, with new openings such as Pike & Pine and Common popping up on the scene. However, there’s one restaurant which holds a special place in my heart. The Salt Room is an award-winning seafood restaurant, located a pebble’s throw away from Brighton’s seafront.

Clad in wood panels, which look like they could have been washed up from the sea, antique light bulbs and framed blueprints of the West Pier, the restaurant brings to life its best of the locally-soured seafood menu and ambient location.

The food menu offers exciting seafood concoctions, a daily shared fish specials such as Monkfish and Seabass and grilled meats, paying homage to its sister restaurant The Coal Shed. The drinks menu offers a selection of wines to complement the seafood dishes and enhance the flavours, whilst the cocktail menu offers cocktails to be paired with each course. Here’s what I went for on my visit:

Aperitif cocktail: Haywardโ€™s Royale – Gin, Tropical Candy, Citrus, Prosecco

To Start: Cod Fritters served with a whipped smoked cod roe (which was to die for), Jersey Oysters (the more mild end of the oyster spectrum) and Seaweed Sourdough, served with brown crab mayo and tarragon butter.

Main course: Hake, leeks, mussels and cider sauce – never have leeks tasted so good!

Cocktails: Pie Crust – Thyme & Sage Buttered Calvados, Drambuie, Ginger & Lemon Candy, Bitters and Cane & Molasses – Aged Rum, Sesame & Pineapple
Falernum, Tropical Candy, Bitters

Desert: The famous ‘Taste of the Pier’ – The Salt Room’s very own Heston-style desert, with Candy Floss, coconut ice-cream, chocolate pebbles, fudge and matcha honeycomb.

All this delicious food was served with a smile and it’s definitely not a one-off! as the serving staff were as brilliant and attentive last time.

Monday nights are BYO, with a ยฃ5 corkage fee and judging by the menu, the Sunday roasts look pretty epic (even served with cauliflower cheese!).

The Salt Room also offers a selection of various afternoon teas, from caffeine to cocktail, starting at ยฃ24.95 through to ยฃ34.95. Afternoon tea highlights include Crab Scotch egg,  Aged beef tartare & egg yolk jam sandwich,  House made clotted cream & strawberry elderflower jam and Pistachio & raspberry Battenberg.
